The Vaccine

Mumpsvax contains the Jeryl Lynn strain of mumps vaccine and is manufactured by Merck in the USA

Legal status

The vaccine is a prescription only unlicensed medicine

Effectiveness

The vaccine provides effective long-term immunity in around 85% of children immunised.

Though it is the least effective of the single vaccines, it is at least as effective as the mumps component of the MMR.

Vaccination age

The vaccination can be given at any time from 12 months.

Side effects

These are uncommon, but can include mild flu-like symptoms; rarely swelling of the parotid glands under the ears (in about 1% of immunisations); extremely rarely a mild meningitis can occur.
